Have you ever been faced with the dilemma of shopping for new towels for your bathroom and feeling overwhelmed with the wealth of options out there? We've all felt that way at some point and know how difficult it can be to choose the perfect towel. That's why we've done the homework for you and compiled some tips on how to find plush, absorbent towels that you'll enjoy using.

The first step when looking for towels is to ask yourself what sort of fabric you desire. There are a plethora of options available so it is important to have an idea of what you want. The best towels by far are those constructed of 100% Egyptian cotton. Egyptian cotton is known for its extra long staple and highly absorbent fibrous threads which make for a thick, thirsty towel that feels amazing against your skin.

Similar to Egyptian cotton is Supima cotton which is also known for its extra long staple and excellent absorbency. Supima cotton is the American-grown version of Egyptian cotton and offers a luxurious look and feel. It is another excellent choice if you're looking for a highly absorbent and durable towel.

When browsing cotton towels, you'll notice that most cotton towels are terry cloth. Terry cloth is a pile fabric which means that the material consists of looped fibers that stand up close to one another on the surface of the underlying woven (or knit) material and act like tiny sponges that absorb water. In most cases, the longer the loops, the more absorbent the towel because it provides more surface area to absorb and come in contact with the water.

Lesser known, but steadily rising in popularity are fabrics that blend bamboo fibers and cotton. Besides being naturally antibacterial, highly sustainable and hypoallergenic, bamboo blend towels are luxuriously soft.

Towel weight is also a factor to consider when buying a towel. The weight of a towel is measured by GSM (grams per square meter). Low GSM (300-400) towels are light and thin while high GSM (450-600) towels are thicker and heavier. Typically, the higher the GSM, the more absorbent and luxurious the towel. However, there are instances where you'll want a low GSM towel. For example, low GSM towels are great for the gym or in your kitchen because they're lightweight and will dry more quickly than a heavier towel.

Apart from towel fabric and weight, you'll want to consider the style of towel you are looking for. Brightly colored and patterned towels are great ways to incorporate a touch of whimsy to your bathroom while neutral towels in soothing colors are perfect for creating a sophisticated, spa-like atmosphere. Heather Young, Vice President and Buyer for, an online luxury bedding retailer, offers some insight on what's trending right now:

"Textured towels are a must-have on my list. They have a distinct look that adds a dimension of luxury to your bathroom. I am in love with Chortex's Honeycomb towels. They're super soft and recreate the feel of being at a spa. Not to mention they are available in sophisticated hues that will enhance your bathroom."

The bath towel is more than an afterthought or mere accessory. It's an essential item that should be comfortable and durable while complementing your bathroom decor. If you invest in a quality towel, it will last you for several seasons and save you money in the long run.
